Sometimes forms can best be built in section which are
assembled after having stiffened. Should be made separately
and added to the basic form after setting up instead of trying
to build from the bottom up and inviting untimely collapse.
Many coiled pieces are round, but a coiled work certainly
doesn't have to be. The diameter of the coils will depend on
the size, use  and desired appearance of your project.
Ceramic Technique Coils       Page: 2
It's important to work the clay of each coil firmly and smoothly into the coil
beneath so they do not separate when the piece is dried and fired. The top of
each coil is lightly scored and moisten   before the next coil is added and with a
wet sponge smooth  the surface.
It is often better to work on more than one object at a time as coil forms grow, they tend to become quite
wobbly and adding more coils could cause collapse. After every three or four rows let the clay dry or set up
for an hour before continuing to add coils. If you want a smooth exterior work both sides of the coil down to
the coil below, but if you want the coils to show on the outside as I'm doing in this sculpture work down only
the inside of the coils.
As you use the coil technique, keep a vision of the finished piece in mind so that you can maintain control
of is unfired move as little as possible. Cover your work piece with plastic and allow it to stiffen as you is
unfired move as little as possible. Cover your work piece with plastic and allow it to stiffen as you continuing
working on it. I often draw a design sketch  but while I'm working and touching the clay I  will almost always
change it to new ideas or changes in my original design. Working with clay produces a fine dust that should
never be inhaled or ingested.

Respirators can help and should certainly be worn by most people. Clean the work are frequently, but use
mops and sponges and plenty of water, always clean wet rather than dry. Scrupulous attention to safety
precautions is a must in a ceramic studio, check the labels of which of the substances you have on hand if
contain toxic materials.
